We have usually done a board game night on the Monday night in freshers week, and has usually had quite a good turnout. It works well with a combination of free alcohol, free pizza and a good way of meeting people by playing board games together. It's great for the people who are more anti-social and don't want to go out clubbing but also want to go out and meet people (or because their parents have told them they should) without the pressure, and also is a good way to meet some of their coursemates for usually the first time..
